BETHEL – James Macgregor, Bethel Historical Society Program Committee chairman, has announced the schedule of events for 2006.
Activities will commence on Saturday, Feb. 18, with the 33rd annual Heritage Day. Beginning on March 16, Society Director Stanley R. Howe will offer a multi-session course on “Maine in the Civil War,” which will end on April 30.
On May 11 the society will feature an oral history night, which will focus on the 40th anniversary of the society’s founding in 1966. The annual Faye Taylor Memorial Art Show and the St. Never’s Day Sale will take place on May 27.
On June 8, Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., state historian and director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, will present a lecture, “A Painter’s Progress: The Life, Work and Travels of Harrison Bird Brown of Portland, Maine.”
The society will sponsor a house and garden tour on June 17 and 18. The annual July 4th community picnic will feature a concert by the Portland Brass Quintet. Another brass band concert will be offered by the Yankee Brass Band on July 29.
Sudbury Canada Days will be held the second weekend in August with the annual Hall Memorial Lecture and 18th century re-enactors. A feature will be a lecture and second edition book signing by Tom Hubka of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee on Aug. 13.
The annual meeting on Sept. 14 will feature a 40-year photographic retrospective, 1966-2006, on the society. There will be a lecture on Oct. 12 by biographer James J. Kiepper on “Styles Bridges: Yankee Senator.”
On Nov. 9, Kent Ryden, Ph.D., director, American and New England Studies at the University of Maine, will discuss “Landscape and Figures: Nature and Culture in New England.”
The year will close with the annual “Christmas with the Masons” on Dec. 7 and the ninth annual New Year’s Bethel on Dec. 31. In addition two bus tours, in cooperation with Senior College, are planned for the spring and fall. One is expected to include the Longfellow and Tate houses in Portland, the other the Robert Frost home in Franconia, N.H.
