AUGUSTA (AP) – Former state Rep. Jane Saxl of Bangor died after an illness Tuesday night in Florida.

Saxl, who was 66, served four terms in the House of Representatives, finishing in 2000.

Gov. John Baldacci, also of Bangor, said Saxl was instrumental in passage of landmark health care legislation and was an advocate of high quality public education. Previously Saxl, a Democrat, served in a number of community posts and was instrumental in the founding of the Beth El Synagogue in Bangor. Saxl was the mother of former Rep. Michael Saxl of Portland, who was speaker of the House for a term.
