CASTINE – The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team rallied from a second-half deficit to snap Maine Maritime’s 10-game winning streak in a 57-47 victory on Thursday evening.
The Polar Bears (21-2), ranked sixth in the latest national poll, will host a NESCAC quarterfinal game on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Tufts University. The Mariners drop just their fourth game of the season and fall to 20-4.
Bowdoin held a one-point edge at intermission, 26-25, but a spurt by Maine Martime was capped by a Caitlyn Grant layup at the 16:40 mark, giving the Mariners a 31-29 edge. Marisa Berne responded for the Polar Bears, hitting a pair of 3-pointers to give the Polar Bears the lead for good. But Bowdoin put the defensive clamps down on Maritime, holding the hosts scoreless for nearly 13 minutes in the second stanza to pull away.
Jill Anelauskas led the Polar Bears with a game-high 19 points, while Justine Pouravelis scored eight points, grabbed eight boards and collected six blocks.
Alyssa Burns and Julie Knights scored 13 points apiece for the Mariners.
