MECHANIC FALLS – Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult and Community Education’s spring program is under way. The Learning Center is accepting new day and evening students for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and GED testing.

Call the adult education office at 345-3217 for more information about the classes and for classes that are offered at Minot Consolidated School.

“Adoption and Foster Parenting” will be led by Carol Brocker RN/MA and “Everything You Want to Know” by Paula Lyons-Myrick, LSW. The free program will provide information about the need for foster homes in the communities as well as the steps to become a foster or adoptive parent. It will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Elm Street School.

“Woodburning” will be taught by Yelena Campbell from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 1, 8 and 15, at the Poland Community School. Create a design burned onto wood and decorate with colored pencils. Registration is $15 for residents; $18, nonresidents. Bring a wood-burning tool or soldering iron, wood plaque, bat or board.

Sally Motycka will teach a pottery class. The first two classes are devoted to building, while the last two are for decorating. They will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 6, 9, 16 and 21, at Poland Regional High School. Registration is $25/$30 and lab fee is $10, payable to instructor.

“First Aid” will be instructed by Wayne Cotterly. The American Red Cross course is designed to teach the basics of first aid. Those who complete the course will receive an American Red Cross first aid basics card. The class will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Poland Regional High School. Registration is $40/$45.

Sara Carson will teach “QuickBooks Pro 2004” from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for six weeks starting Wednesday, March 8, at the Learning Center, Mechanic Falls Municipal Building. The course is designed to familiarize participants with QuickBooks. Registration is $60/$70.

A “CPR Heart Saver Course” will be led by Wayne Cotterly. The American Heart Association course is designed to teach the necessary skills to perform CPR on adults, children and infants. It will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 14, at Poland Regional High School. Registration is $35/$40.

“Hats with Hugs” will be led by Barbara Freeley and Pat Demers. Make a hat for Hats with Hugs Program and/or a snowman hat. Hats with Hugs is dedicated to knitting, crocheting, and donating hats to those who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or other illnesses. There will be a supply of yarn or participants can bring their own. Call for needle size. The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 15, 22 and 29. Registration is $12/$14.

Robert Libby will instruct “Maintaining Your Computer” from 6:30 to 8 p.m.Thursday, March 16, at the Learning Center, Mechanic Falls Municipal Building. Learn the simple strategies to keep a computer in shape, Registration is $5/$6.
