LEWISTON – Health and Wellness Services at Central Maine Medical Center will begin offering tai chi classes beginning Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Health and Wellness Center. The 5:30 p.m. classes will be held in six-week sessions and will be ongoing.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese movement art with health benefits. Research studies have shown that tai chi practice lowers blood pressure, increases respiratory capacity and improves balance.

Betsey Foster, MPH, will teach the program. She has studied tai chi since 1988 and taught since 1993. Her emphasis is on the medical benefits of the art, and she focuses on making tai chi accessible to all regardless of ability. She also writes and lectures on the subject.
