Small business owners in Maine have every right to be angry and concerned about a proposed increase in the minimum wage. These business owners have enough to contend with, such as competition from big-box stores and very steep property taxes.

I think everyone can agree that it is difficult enough for small businesses to stay open the way things are now. Why make it more difficult?

In my opinion, any hike in the minimum wage would not have a huge impact on the state’s economy. That has been shown by a seeming lack of interest by the state’s chambers of commerce. However, the hike would have a negative impact on all small businesses in the state.

I support Sen. Lois Snowe-Mello in her fight to keep Maine’s small businesses alive, and I hope that many others with the same level-headed thinking as her will join in saving Maine’s small businesses.
