JAY – On Wednesday, another raccoon tested for positive for rabies, this one after it came in contact with a dog on Walker Hill Road. It’s the second rabid raccoon the town has had in that area since Feb. 14.

The first rabid raccoon was shot a quarter-mile away by an East Dixfield Road man after it came at him in his shed 12 days ago.

This time, the raccoon had contact with a dog at the Walker Hill Road residence, Jay Animal Control Officer Larry Wright said Wednesday.

The raccoon was shot Sunday. Wright said he took it to the state rabies testing lab Tuesday because the lab was closed for the holiday Monday.

Wright said he received the positive results Wednesday.

The dog the raccoon had contact with was up-to-date on its rabies shots but it was going to receive a precautionary booster shot, Wright said. The dog is also going to be quarantined at the home for 45 days.

Wright said people need to make sure their animals are up-to-date on rabies shots.

He also said people need to watch their children and warn them about the dangers of the wild animals, so they’ll know what to do if they see one outdoors.
