CALAIS (AP) – American inspectors have discovered more illegal lobster in Canadian shipments bound for the United States.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently inspected shipments at the border between St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and Calais, Maine. They were looking for undersized and female, egg-bearing lobsters that are supposed to be thrown back into the water.
Agency spokesman Mark Oswell says of 37 trucks inspected, 17 had violations and will be handed penalties. While most shipments had fewer than 10 illegal lobsters, one shipment was carrying 191 of the illegal crustaceans.
In December, the American agency found illegal lobster in nearly half of all Canadian shipments heading south, resulting in more than $30,000 in penalties. Last month, Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Chris d’Entremont warned that access to the United States could be drastically affected if the trade in illegal lobsters was not curbed.
