PORTLAND (AP) – A Portland man has been charged with the murder of a friend after a night out at a strip club, police said.
Steven Clark, 28, was charged Wednesday with killing Robert Wagner, also 28, who had been missing since the early morning hours of Feb. 15.
Wagner’s remains were found Wednesday in some woods in Baldwin near the home of one of Clark’s relatives, according to Portland Police Chief Tim Burton. An autopsy was expected to be conducted today.
Wagner and Clark were among a group of men who went to Platinum Plus, a strip club in Portland, on Feb. 14. Wagner was killed sometime after they left the club at 2 a.m. and went to Clark’s house, police said.
Police are looking into the possibility that drugs or alcohol may have factored into Wagner’s death. But Burton would not comment on the cause of death or a motive, although police believe they know what led to the slaying.
“He was killed in Portland, that’s as specific as I will get,” Burton said.
Police said that Wagner’s brother reported him missing about 36 hours after he was last seen. Family members told police it was out of character for Wagner to miss personal and business appointments.
Clark was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Westbrook, where he had apparently been staying with a friend. He is being held without bail in the Cumberland County Jail.
Other people besides Clark were involved in or knew of the crime, Burton said. No other charges have been filed, but Burton has not ruled out additional arrests.
