BANGOR – Senior Travis Carrier of Auburn scored a dazzling 26 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 78-71 victory over Husson in men’s basketball action Friday evening.

The Beavers (13-14) placed four players in double figures while advancing to the North Atlantic Conference final. Sophomore Matt St. John of Wayne finished with 16 points, while sophomore Sean Fry of Jay chipped in with 13 points, and senior Travis Magnusson had 11 points. Carrier recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds to go along with his 26 points.

The Beavers led throughout the first half, but the Eagles (17-9) battled to within three, 42-39, on a tip at the buzzer by first year forward Scott Kissinger. The Eagles opened the second half with a 21-6 run to build a 12-point lead, but the Beavers reversed the Eagles’ fortunes in the final seconds on outstanding efforts from Fry, St. John and Magnusson.

Junior Jason Harvey paced the Eagles with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Women’s basketball

USM 65, Keene State 40

GORHAM – Ashley Marble spun a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 65-40 win over Keene State in women’s basketball action Friday evening.

The Huskies (26-1) jumped out to a 33-14 lead in the first half. Donna Cowing added 13 points on four field goals and a pair of free throws, including three from beyond the arc.

Bri Barnes paced Keene State (16-11) with 14 points on four treys and a pair of free throws in the loss.

UMF 81, Lasell 64

CASTINE – Kair Simpson had a huge night, scoring a game-high 41 points to power the University of Maine at Farmington to an 81-64 victory over Lasell College in women’s basketball action and earn a spot in the NAC semifinals.

The game opened with a flurry, both teams traded baskets on their way to an 11-11 tie before Simpson stole the ball and executed a layup at the other end. The Beavers (23-4) then exploded for a 14-3 run, powered by Simpson who tallied 22 first half points.

The Lazers (14-12) tried to hang on in the second half, but the Beavers opened the frame with a 12-5 run and controlled the tempo. Theresa Allen got Lasell to within eight points of the lead, but the Beavers pulled away down the stretch. Allen recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 boards.

Melissa Sawyer added 13 points, and Karen Sirois had six steals to go with her eight points for the Beavers. Simpson was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Maine Maritime 60, Castleton 41

CASTINE – Michelle Gott scored the first five points for the Mariners and posted a game-high 17 points as Maine Maritime Academy sailed to a 60-41 win over Castleton State in women’s basketball action Friday evening.

In a scrappy first half, the Spartans (17-9) clawed their way back from a 15-4 deficit to take a short lived two-point lead capped by a 3-pointer from guard Jessica Banks. The Mariners (22-4) responded with a pair of free throws from Gott to tie the game at 22 apiece with 3:40 to go in the half.

Maine Maritime muscled their way past the Spartans for a 29-25 lead before the break, and opened the second half with a surge. Following an 11-5 run, the Mariners limited the Spartans to nine points over the last 14 minutes. Julia Knights recorded a double-double for the Mariners with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Baseball

Ole Miss 9, Maine 2

OXFORD, Miss. – Troy Martin struggled on the mound as Ole Miss handed the University of Maine a 9-2 season-opening loss in baseball action Friday.

Ole Miss (4-1) capitalized early, taking a 7-0 lead after three innings.

Right fielder Mark Wright notched his first round tripper of the season and went 2-for-4 with four runs and a pair of RBIs in the contest.

The Black Bears (0-1) were a bit less prolific, garnering only seven hits compared to 14 for Ole Miss. The second baseman, Danny Menendez, collected a team-high two hits.
