AUGUSTA – A Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery work group was put together by Gov. John Baldacci in March 2005 to review and assess the state veterans’ cemeteries for their ability to provide burial services befitting veterans.

Included were availability of timely burials; accessibility to families; appearance; adherence to national cemetery standards; and perpetual care requirements.

Baldacci met with the group recently and said he anticipates the proposal of the budget found in Recommendation 1 of the report (representing a fully funded system).

He also indicated that his staff would work with officials to help change job descriptions and titles of current cemetery workers to more accurately reflect what they are expected to do.

Baldacci thanked the group for their efforts and asked that rather than dissolving, he looks forward to working with them in the future as they look at implementing the recommendations.
