AUBURN – Donald J. Bernard is running for the District 15 Maine Senate seat, which comprises Auburn, Durham, New Gloucester and Poland.

He served in both the House and Senate several years ago and is now retired from business.

“I believe I can make a substantial difference in Augusta,” he said in a prepared statement. “‘Maine, the Way Life Should Be’ must be a realistic statement – not just a six-word slogan.”

Bernard is running as a Democratic Clean Election candidate.

“Taxes are getting out of hand; veterans from past wars are now being joined by those who have served or are now currently serving and being shamefully forsaken; senior citizens who solidified our cities for years are now bearing the brunt of high medical deductibles and excessive co-payments, and facing the risk of losing their homes.

“With the necessary increases in tuition at several local parochial schools that may force mergings or possibly result in closings, this could very well result in catastrophic burdens on public schooling,” Bernard said.

He served four years in the Air Force as an airborne radar electronics technician in the Far East and was an electrician at Bath Iron Works. He later worked as an electronics technician in charge of the environmental testing lab at the former Raytheon Co. plant in Lewiston. He retired as a professional deep sea salvage diver and was a certified scuba instructor/examiner for the National Association of Skin Diving Schools.

He is married to the former Anita Shaw. They have two sons, Glenn and Troy.
