PERU – Broken and frozen water pipes were discovered Monday at the Rockemeka Grange Hall, adding to mounting problems at the building.
At Monday’s selectmen’s meeting, Selectman Kathy Hussey said she took a portable heater from the Town Office to thaw the ice in the toilets to keep them from breaking. She said Road Commissioner David Gammon shut off pipes in the basement. Jim Pulsifer came to assess the damage.
The building is scheduled to be used for voting on Monday, March 20.
Selectmen have spent considerable time discussing the fate of the hall, but nothing definitive has been decided. Families in Crisis serves dinners in the hall, and the Historical Society has its library upstairs. The town also uses the hall for voting.
In other business, Arvah Lyon, consulting engineer for the proposed boat launch on Worthley Pond, has given the town modifications to his original plan. After the site was inspected by the Department of Environmental Protection, he moved the ramp six feet north of the original location on East Shore Road in lot nine. The move was necessary to satisfy the state requirement of being 25 feet from any streams.
Lyon plans completion between July 2006 and August 2007. The area will include handicap parking, a turning spur, six parking spaces for trailered rigs plus two auto parking spaces, a retention pond and a pad for a portable toilet.
One weapons permit was approved by selectmen.
Selectmen will hold a public hearing on the annual town meeting warrant at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Peru School. The town meeting will be Saturday, March 18, and voting will be Monday, March 20.
