PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – A daughter of former Gov. Craig Benson faces up to a year in jail after being arrested on a charge of allegedly assaulting her ex-boyfriend.

Kristen Benson, 17, of Rye, faces a misdemeanor charge of simple assault. She allegedly caused “unprivileged physical contact to (the ex-boyfriend) by twisting two fingers on his right hand” on Jan. 26, according to court documents, Foster’s Daily Democrat reported. The incident took place at the boy’s home, the documents said.

According to police radio logs, the boy’s mother called police and reported her son’s ex-girlfriend pushed him and twisted his fingers. Police said they did not have any record of the boy requiring medical attention.

Benson was scheduled to appear at Portsmouth District Court on Monday; defense lawyer Cathy J. Green arranged for her to waive formal arraignment.

Police released Benson on $800 personal recognizance bail. As part of her bail conditions, she is required to “make every effort to avoid her ex-boyfriend” while at school, according to court documents.

A trial date has not yet been set.

Craig Benson, who has two daughters, lost his re-election bid to John Lynch in 2004.
