ORONO – The 50th annual John W. Coombs Maine YMCA State Swimming Championship is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, at Wallace Indoor Pool at the University of Maine.

There will be about 1,200 competitors from all over the state. Teams will represent YMCAs from Dover-Foxcroft to the North, Mt. Desert Island in the east, to Biddeford and Sanford in the south.

Other area entries are Auburn-Lewiston, Augusta, Bath, Freeport and Portland. Bath YMCA is the defending champ.

As many as 20 swimmers will be preparing for or qualifying for the National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championships to be held April 5-6 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

There will be 88 events for 10 age groups in 6 sessions. Ages 8-under boys and girls will swim Saturday morning; ages 10-under girls and 10-under and 12-under boys will compete Saturday afternoon; ages 12-under girls will swim Saturday night; ages 14-under and senior girls and boys will compete Sunday, girls in the morning and boys in the afternoon. Trophies will be presented to the top 8 competitors in each event. Ribbons will be awarded to the next 8 finishers.

Competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children.
