Johnny Jackson, a former drummer for the Jackson Five, was found stabbed to death early Thursday morning at a home in Gary, Ind., police said.

Jackson, 54, was pronounced dead 12:20 a.m. CST, according to the Lake County, Ind., coroner’s office.

About 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to the house after an upstairs resident of the home heard a disturbance on the first floor between Jackson and a female acquaintance, Gary Police Cmdr. Jack Arnold said.

Because of the commotion, the witness went downstairs to check on the situation and discovered Jackson unresponsive with a stab wound to his chest, Arnold said.

Reports conflict on whether Johnny Jackson was related to Gary’s legendary Jackson family, which includes pop stars Michael and Janet.

Gary police believe Johnny Jackson, who replaced the Jackson Five’s original drummer, Milford Hite, around 1967, was a cousin of the family. Some Internet sites report that Jackson was not a blood relative of the family.

Police had no one in custody on Thursday evening, and the case remained under investigation.
