PARIS – The 2006 One Book – One Community program will include a presentation on “Rethinking Your Backyard” by Barbara Murphy at 7 p.m. Monday, March 6, at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office. Murphy, Extension educator, works with agriculture and gardening programs.

Her presentation will address issues of landscaping and wildlife habitat, and she will ask the question, “Can you have a beautiful landscape without killing yourself and other living things?”

The program is associated with the One Book One Community reading of “Suburban Safari; a Year on the Lawn” by Maine author Hannah Holmes. Holmes takes a close look at her backyard in South Portland to observe the activity of birds, insects, animals, trees and grass.

As she observes, she also consults books and experts to find out more about what she sees. As she learns she describes it to the reader, who also learns about the active plant and animal life in a backyard.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Office is located at 9 Olson Road, South Paris. For directions, visit www.umext.maine.edu/counties/oxford.htm.

The public is welcome. For details, call the Extension office at 743-6329.
