LEWISTON – Daniel J. Fornari, director of the Deep Ocean Exploration Institute at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will visit Bates College to discuss technological advances in ocean exploration at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 204 of Carnegie Science Hall, 44 Campus Ave.

Fornari will speak about “Revealing the Deep: The 21st-Century Revolution in Ocean Science and Technology.” Sponsored by the Bates geology department, the event is designed for a lay audience and is open to the public at no cost.

Fornari, who has worked at Woods Hole since 1993, will describe how technology has changed research methods, the interpretation of data and even the kinds of questions ocean researchers can expect to resolve. Advances in engineering have largely taken the field researcher out of harm’s way, thanks to sophisticated sensors and unmanned submersibles that can explore the depths. Advances in information processing have increased the amount and kind of data that can be meaningful.
