CANTON – A public hearing will be held at 8:30 a.m. prior to the annual town meeting at 9 a.m. in the Municipal Building on Saturday, March 11, on an article to change the cluster-housing ordinance.

The new ordinance proposes a minimum lot size of 10,000 square feet in the village center, as long as 30,000 square feet of corresponding open space were set aside.

This will apply only to the designated village center, which is being built for people who had homes in the flood plain and have been bought out.

Project coordinator Diane Ray said there is more need for moderate-income housing than they had originally planned. The new plan calls for 40 house lots on the 30-acre parcel off Route 108 and out of the flood plain.

The proposed new number of homes would allow the town to maximize the use of municipal water and sewer as well as balance the development of open space, according to town officials.

Elections will be Friday, March 10, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building.

Incumbent selectman Jacqueline Conant is running for re-election unopposed.

Longtime-incumbent Road Commissioner Craig Gammon is running for re-election opposed by Steven Cole. Bernard Adams and Sue Degroot are running for the two Planning Board vacancies, and Cynthia Bissell is running for the vacant director’s seat on the SAD 21 School Board.

In addition to the election of officers, there are nine questions on the referendum.
