GRAY – SAD 15 directors will vote March 15 whether to compensate high school juniors with a day off for taking the state-mandated SAT on Saturday, April 1.
Superintendent Victoria Burns has asked the school board to consider excusing the students from classes April 14 to make up for the testing.
“This test is mandated by the state, and the kids have to take it on Saturday. It’s absolutely vital to get a high percentage of kids to take the test in order for the district to make adequate yearly progress, a measure used by the state officials based on attendance,” board Chairman Alan Rich of New Gloucester said.
SAD 15 will provide bus transportation to and from Gray-New Gloucester High School. Lunch will be served.
Proctors overseeing the test will be hired and compensated by the Maine Department of Education.
“Ninety-five percent of the students must come,” said Karen Caprio, SAD 15 Director of Teaching and Learning.
Directors raised questions about teachers’ time if juniors are excused April 14 and setting a precedent with time off.
