PORTLAND – David Eugene Haggett, 62, of Yarmouth, died Monday, March 6, after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Bath, on Nov. 16, 1943, the son of Joseph E. Haggett and Muriel A. (Spinney) Haggett. He was a graduate of Morse High School, Class of 1962. He served in the U.S. Army and had a tour of duty in Vietnam. He returned to Maine and began his lifelong career as an auto mechanic. He received the GM Certified Mechanic of the Year Award for the Northeast.

He was an active member of the Yarmouth Hockey Boosters and the Bailey Island Tuna Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and had been a member of the Sagadahoc Rod & Gun Club. He liked to go birdhunting with his dog. He enjoyed any kind of fishin’ – salt, fresh and ice – anything that supported his love of the water and the Maine coast islands.

He will be remembered as a man who was “loyal as the sky is blue.” His loyalty was not just to family and friends, but to the causes he supported and to his country. He truly enjoyed the opportunity to attend a reunion of Unit 540 in Williamsburg, Va. He would do anything for his family and friends. Last year, he participated in the PanCan Walk.

He was a handyman who was creative, innovative with an eye for detail and always striving for the best. In many ways, he was a jack-of-all-trades and master of none – except mechanics. A loving and caring man, his great love was for his granddaughters, Maryssa and Kayla.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda of Yarmouth; his son, Michael and his wife, Theresa and their daughters, Maryssa and Kayla of Poland; his aunt, Lucy McDonald of East Lansdown, Pa.; and his cousins, Frances and Doris both of Pennsylvania.
