The eighth grade class at St. Joseph’s School is doing their best to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They are raising money for the Angel Network. This drive is for the project Oprah Winfrey is manufacturing. “Oprah’s Angel Network is dedicated to inspiring people to make a difference in the lives of others. Oprah’s Angel Network seeks to support and fund organizations and individuals dedicated to assisting people with basic human needs, regaining dignity, and with educational initiatives. Organizations that encourage participants to return their gifts through social service are often recognized”, is a quote from Oprah’s website.

As a class, the eighth grade is bringing in money from their homes for the Angel Network. The students got together to figure out between how much money each person could bring in. The realistic goal was the lowest amount of money they could bring in, and the dream goal was for the highest amount of money they thought they could bring in. Their realistic goal was $340, and the dream goal was a total of $615. With the money the class brought in, they raised $215.

On Friday, January 13th, St. Joseph’s School held a Jeans for Generosity day. This is when everyone in the school is allowed to wear jeans to school if they bring in a dollar or more. The students still had to wear their uniform shirts though.

The money raised during the drive was divided between the fifth grade class helping a 20 year old Haitian girl named Christella Cayemitte and the eighth grade class raising the money for the Angel Network. The fifth graders received $125 for Christella, and the eighth grade raised $315 for the Angel Network.

Thanks to the students at St. Joseph’s School that participated, their charitable families, and the faculty, the eighth grade now have a total of $565.

The class is hoping to get together and buy things that the families would need. For instance, they want to get kitchen appliances, furniture, sports gear, cleaning utensils and more. Buying these things will help put the finishing touches in the houses for the victims. On the Angel Network they are trying to get these items to the victims as soon as possible.
