AUBURN – Jeanie B. Carey, 89, of Lisbon Falls. passed away Sunday, March 5, at The Hospice House with her loving family by her side, after a brief illness with ovarian cancer, which had been diagnosed on Feb. 3.

She was born in Lisbon Falls on Feb. 18, 1917, a daughter of Orlo A. and Effie G. (Harris) Beal. She was educated in local schools and Lisbon Falls High School. As an adult, she continued her education at Bliss Business College.

She married William M. Carey on May 28, 1934. He died two months after their 61st wedding anniversary in July 1995.

In addition to being a homemaker, she worked for many years at the former Worumbo Manufacturing Co. in Lisbon Falls, until she stopped work to care for her ailing mother-in-law. After the closing of the Worumbo Mill where her husband had worked for 28 years, they kept the family homestead in Lisbon Falls, and relocated to Peterborough, N.H., where she worked in the office at Noone Mills. They later returned to Maine, where she was employed as office manager at Somerset Textiles in Corinna. Prior to leaving Maine, she was an active member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Lisbon Falls, and while living in Corinna, was an active member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Palmyra.

She enjoyed sewing when she was younger, and found great joy in the outdoors, camping and gardening. One of her favorite hobbies was decorating the outside of her home for every holiday, and prior to her illness she was looking forward to decorating for spring. She also enjoyed taking care of her home and spending quality time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Constance (Connie) Footman and her husband, Blaine, of Durham, Carolee Condon and her husband, Freeman, of Durham; one son, William Carey Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Haddam. Conn.; 13 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; her best friend, Rita Avery; sister-in-law, Irene Beal; as well as nephews, nieces and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert E. Beal and Elwood F. Beal Sr.; and two grandsons, Wayne M. Harrington and William M. Carey III.
