Kalle Oakes is back in the sports page. His Feb. 10 column titled “Let the Games begin, and end,” was a typical example of the shallowness and journalistic ineptitude to which we have become accustomed in reading Mr. Oakes’ columns.
He claims that anyone who enjoys the Winter Olympics is only pretending to do so, to act more refined or progressive. Because he does not enjoy really great hockey, thrilling downhill racing and the sense of nationalistic pride that most people get when they see their countrymen get the gold, he does not like it if anyone else does.
If he does not like the Winter Olympics, certainly no one else could or should either.
It is also clear to anyone who is familiar with Oakes’ literary talent that he must have been consulting with a thesaurus when he penned that masterpiece.
In conclusion, I would also say that Oakes’ opinions and personal dislikes make for very dull reading.
