LEWISTON – Stomping feet quaked the bleachers and chants of “Blue!” and “White!” roared through the gym as students at Lewiston High School geared up for tonight’s championship hockey game against Cheverus High School of Portland.

There was an hour-long pep rally at the school Friday, honoring dozens of students for academic and athletic accomplishments, and encouraging a big turnout for the game.

Even Lewiston Mayor Lionel Guay got in on the action, handing out citations of excellence to members of the indoor track team for a KVAC championship win and a second place in the state championship, and members of the cheerleading squad for their KVAC championship win and a third state championship in four years.

“And someone told me there’s a hockey game tomorrow,” Guay said from his spot in the middle of the gym floor. “Who’s gonna win?”

Students cheered, then there was a whistle from the back and the “Pots and Pans Crew” emerged in blue and white dress and face paint, making noise with buckets and brooms. “Devils, Devils, Devils!” they chanted, and everyone joined in.

Athletic Director Jason Fuller said the school has had an exceptional year, winning state and regional championships and having top athletes recognized in sports that include swimming, soccer, cross country running, bowling and girls ice hockey.

He was particularly proud of the cheerleading squad’s continued dominance at the regional and state championships.

“Dynasty? That’s as close to a dynasty as we’ve had for a long time,” he said.

Lewiston lost last year in a state championship hockey face-off against Cheverus, which one reason team members like captain Toby Poirier, 17, are looking forward to tonight’s game.

“It’s revenge. A rematch,” he said after the pep rally, adding that the team will skate hard and “relax and focus on what we’ve got to do, and just believe we can a will win.”

Students are invited to a tailgate party at 3:30 p.m. at the high school today, for face painting and general spirit raising before a march to The Colisee for the 6 p.m. game.
