MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Chris Webber picked up the slack for an injured Allen Iverson, scoring 31 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and adding nine assists to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the Memphis Grizzlies 94-91.

The Sixers played the second half without Iverson, the league’s second-leading scorer, who sprained his right ankle near the end of the first half and did not return.

Webber was 12-of-19 from the field and led five Sixers in double figures. Webber’s 14-footer with 48 seconds left gave Philadelphia the lead for good, and the Sixers held on to snap a three-game losing streak.

Pau Gasol’s desperation shot from well beyond halfcourt for Memphis as time expired did not come close.

Iverson had 18 points and six assists before leaving. Steven Hunter and Andre Iguodala each scored 13 points and reserve John Salmons had 12.

Philadelphia led 89-87 after Hunter blocked Jake Tsakalidis’ dunk attempt, and Memphis’ 22nd turnover on the ensuing possession led to a pair of baskets by Salmons with 1:19 left.

Gasol’s tip-in with a minute left knotted the game at 89.

But Webber hit the go-ahead 14-footer, and Kyle Korver and Iguodala added free throws for the final margin after Gasol scored on a dunk with 15 seconds remaining.

Tsakalidis led Memphis with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Gasol and Mike Miller scored 16 apiece. Chucky Atkins finished with 15 points.

The Sixers got untracked early with Iverson and Webber leading the way. Iverson already had reached double figures and Webber had nine before the end of the opening quarter.

Philadelphia also forced eight early turnovers, with Iverson stepping into the lane for steals that looked like the passes were intended for him. The Sixers led by as many as 10 in the half, but Memphis closed to 50-44 at the break as Miller scored 10.

Webber had 17 in the half, and Iverson 18 before hurting the ankle about a second before halftime.

On the play, Iverson drove to the right and appeared to roll the ankle before taking a shot from the right baseline as the shot clock expired. Then he landed on some people sitting along the baseline after falling out of bounds. Iverson was not putting any weight on the leg as he made it to the Philadelphia bench. As the Sixers called timeout, Iverson was carried to the dressing room.

Memphis opened the second half on a 26-12 run fueled by 11 points apiece from Tsakalidis and Atkins, propelling the Grizzlies to a 70-62 lead, their biggest lead of the game.

Iguodala’s dunk with under a second left pulled Philadelphia within 73-70 entering the fourth.
