SABATTUS – A small propane leak forced businesses to temporally close Tuesday night until the Sabattus Fire and Police departments were able to pinpoint the problem.

Fire Chief Don Therrien described the problem as a small propane leak coming from the cap of a tank belonging to Yeung’s Chinese Restaurant.

“We evacuated Cumberland Farms’ complex until we were able to isolate and locate the problem,” he said.

Gas attendant John Stebbins was working when the incident occurred.

“Customers were coming into the store complaining about a smell from outside,” he said. Shortly afterward, he said the smell started to seep into the building, and that is when he called the authorities.

“This has happened before,” said Chun Yeung, Yeung’s Chinese Restaurant owner. “It cost us hundreds of dollars every time it leaks.” Yeung said he noticed a small leak a few months back due to a loose tank cap after it was filled. The tank was filled yesterday.

Suburban Propane serviced the tank Tuesday night and the businesses were allowed to reopen.
