Camp registration

AUGUSTA – Girl Scouts of Kennebec Council is accepting registration for its summer camp programs. One- and two-week programs are available for all girls in grades two to 12 at camps located in Bridgton, Kittery Point, Readfield and Augusta.

All programs are open to Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts and provide girls with an opportunity to explore the wonder of nature while developing leadership skills. Talk on big bang’

CUMBERLAND – Southern Maine Astronomers will host a public meeting on “The Big Bang – How It All Started” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Congregational Church, Cumberland Center.

Speaker will be Dr. Eric Wollman, professor of physics at Bates College. He will offer some insight on how the universe began and on the nature of dark matter. For more information, visit www.southernmaineastronomers.org.

Students need host families

ORONO – Maine families are needed to host Japanese exchange students, ages 12 to 18, for four weeks this summer as part of a two-way exchange program sponsored by the Maine 4-H program. The Japanese youth will stay with their American host families from mid-July to mid-August.

The exchange is open to families living in Maine with children close in age to the Japanese participants. Families without children in this age range will be considered as hosts for adult chaperones from Japan.

Pruning basics

AUGUSTA – Tree pruning basics will be taught at the Pine Tree State Arboretum from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 25.

Sue McIntyre, a certified nursery and landscape professional from Longfellow’s Greenhouses in Manchester, will lead the session. Preregistration is required. Fee is $10 for members, $20 for nonmembers. Call 621-0031 or e-mail ptsaedu@adelphia.net to register.

AUGUSTA – Gov. John Baldacci has proclaimed April as Autism Awareness Month in the state. Those interested in learning more about autism can visit the Autism Society of Maine at its open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, or call at 1-800-273-5200 for awareness packets that will be available to take home or mail out to the general public.
