The Maine Forest Service has released a warning about dry conditions and the danger of forest fires this weekend.

In areas of the state without snow cover, fires could spread easily and be difficult to control, a fire prevention specialist said. According to the National Weather Service, the current cool, dry and windy weather pattern will stay in Maine for a prolonged period. With predicted winds of 10 to 12 mph (and higher gusts of more than 15 mph), partly sunny skies and relative humidity near 40 percent, there is good potential for fires to spread rapidly.

Anyone burning brush or debris should use extra care when burning outdoors. Be sure to obtain an open-burning permit from your local fire department or the Maine Forest Service. Follow all the criteria listed on the burn permit and have plenty of water available to extinguish the fire if weather conditions change. Participating towns in the southern third of the state may obtain an online burn permit for a fee at www.maineburnpermit.com.

Tips for burning outdoors:

• Never burn on windy days.

• Keep your fire reasonably small, no larger than you can control should problems arise.

• Avoid burning near buildings.

• Check weather conditions prior to any open burning.

• Burn only legally allowed materials. If unsure, check with your local fire officials or Maine Forest Service Ranger.

Do not leave your fire unattended. Make sure your fire is completely out before you leave the area.
