RUMFORD – A Rumford man, charged with arson for allegedly setting fire to his apartment on Thursday, is to be arraigned Monday, March 20, in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
Michael J. Merrill, 28, remained behind bars late Friday afternoon at Oxford County Jail in Paris, where he was taken Thursday night after failing to post $5,000 cash bail on the felony arson charge, a jail official said.
Rumford Sgt. David Bean said Saturday night that Merrill was also charged with violating conditions of release and criminal threatening.
According to the Rumford police log, the fire was set in Merrill’s third-floor apartment at 323 Cumberland St.
That complex was the scene of another arson fire on March 5. In that incident, Wilfred T. Merrill Jr. of Rumford is accused of setting fire to furniture in his second-floor apartment, then holding police at bay with a large hunting knife.
It is not clear if the two Merrills are related, because the police report on Thursday’s arson incident has yet to be completed.
