TAMPA – The University of Maine softball team went 2-1 over the weekend at the Speedline Invitational.
After losing Saturday to Elon, 2-0, the Black Bears rebounded with a 5-1 win over Dartmouth, only to lose to Winthrop 7-1 in Sunday’s finale. Maine finished its swing through Florida at 16-11 while posting a 12-9 mark on its spring break trip.
Jenna Balent took the loss in Saturday’s title despite allowing just the two runs on five hits while striking out four.
In the afternoon session, senior Erin Provost went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while Brittany Cheney had a pair of RBI to lead the Black Bears to the win. Sarah Bennis went the distance, pitching a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
Provost, Kristie Hawkins and Dana Grimm collected a hit each in the Black Bears’ loss Sunday, and Bennis took the loss on the mound.
Maine opens up at home Saturday against Merrimack at the Mahaney Dome at 1 p.m.
