FARMINGTON – A wrongful death lawsuit filed by a New York woman on behalf of her deceased husband against Franklin Memorial Hospital has been sealed by the court.

It is unclear if the case has been settled out of court but the information in the file is now considered confidential.

Deborah Poppe filed the suit against the hospital in 2005 claiming that hospital nurses failed to contact the doctor of her husband, Wayne Poppe, after the couple asked them to do so when he developed swelling in his leg and pain.

Wayne Poppe, 43, who was admitted to the hospital on Oct. 30, 2000, and had two medical procedures done on him that included extensive debridement, irrigation, and packing of a wound – an abscess in his groin – died two days later on Nov. 2 as a result of an embolism in his leg, according to court documents.

Deborah Poppe’s attorney, Sumner Lipman, said Sunday in an e-mail that the case is considered confidential.

Poppe and hospital attorney George Schelling and hospital administrators were unavailable for comment Monday.
