I was infuriated after reading about the Westboro Baptist Church coming to South Paris. It took me to the boiling point. Then I went to the church’s Web site.

These protesters are only trying to provoke good-natured people into coming to their demonstration. Their purpose? I think it is to sue the town. A small-town police force such as South Paris, even with help, will not be able to hold back 10,000 angry protesters from getting at 10 ignorant Kansas residents waving hate signs. Somebody is going to get hurt. Who?

And, who’s going to pay? The insurance company that covers South Paris? It’s a heck of a way to make a living.

My protest against these protesters is to not protest. Collectively, as a nation, if we ignore these protesters they would stop protesting.

Protesting takes money for airfare, hotels and all other incidentals.

Honor the memory of the young men and women who bravely served their country and who have paid the ultimate price by simply ignoring the protesters.

I say all this as a 13-year, honorably discharged veteran who re-enlisted to go to the Gulf War.

Martin R. Petrovich, South Paris
