FARMINGTON – The Young Republic, a Boston indie folk rock band, will perform today at the Latte Landing in the University of Maine at Farmington’s Student Center.

Farmington is familiar territory for one member of the group.”I’m excited to return from the big city and sell myself back to the community which raised me,” joked Young Republic member Nate Underkuffler in a recent e-mail. Underkuffler, who grew up in Farmington, is a veteran of several local youth orchestras and chamber groups.

The Young Republic’s 10 band members began finding common ground last year at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Singer-songwriter Julian Saporiti called upon the talents of his fellow first-year students to create a versatile rock band with a string section.

Besides attending music school full time, band members began a rigorous schedule of live performances and recording that has garnered them an impressive list of accomplishments.

The Young Republic has self-released two EPs and a full-length album of original material. It has also performed at prestigious Boston clubs and has toured nationally, playing venues from New York City to Nashville to San Francisco.

“Everyone has a different definition of success,” Saporiti said. “If you compare it to artists in the ’60s, I’d say we’re not productive enough. But we’re also full-time students, so I’ll cut us a break.”

In addition to tonight’s concert at the Latte Landing, the band will perform at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. this morning in Nordica Auditorium.

These performances are in conjunction with a first-year seminar, “The Songs of Bob Dylan.” Band members will also participate in a discussion about Dylan and songwriting. The sessions are open to the community.

More information on the band can be found at theyoungrepublic.net. Opening for the Young Republic will be UMF’s own Fake Mustaches featuring experimental pop.

The Latte Landing show will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. The show is free for UMF students and $2 for non-UMF students.
