SUMNER – Three snowmobiles went through the ice on Pleasant Pond Sunday and two more sleds fell into Labrador Pond, according to Canton Fire Chief Wayne Dube who helped rescue some of the sledders.

Dube said he did not think there were any serious injuries. The state game warden covering the accidents could not be reached for information Sunday evening.

According to Dube, the Canton Fire Department used its airboat to bring a half-dozen people to safety after at least two sleds went through the ice on Labrador Pond.

“As we were going across, our airboat was going through the ice,” Dube said Sunday. “You could get out about 300 to 400 yards and then it was black ice and you were breaking through.”

Dube said the sledders were about one mile from shore when the machines broke through the ice.

There was no information available Sunday evening on the identity of the snowmobilers and where they lived, or even how many there were between the two incidents.

It was unclear what happened on Pleasant Pond and whether anyone went into the water with their sleds.

Because of the mild winter, the Maine Warden Service has been warning sledders and fishermen to take extra precautions on lakes and ponds because the ice is thin and especially dangerous.
