MEXICO – A former Mexico man was arrested this weekend and charged with five counts of gross sexual assault against a 9-year-old girl.

Following an 18-month investigation, Sgt. Roy Hodsdon arrested Rene Therrien, no age available, early Sunday afternoon at the Mexico Police Department.

He was transported to Oxford County jail where he remains in lieu of $30,000 cash bail or $150,000 surety, said police Chief Jim Theriault.

Theriault said the five Class A felony counts allegedly occurred between August 2004 and July 2005. He said Therrien, a resident of Portland, has eluded police during the past 18 months, living out of the area for at least eight months.

The alleged assaults occurred in Mexico. He said Hodsdon has been in telephone contact with Therrien off and on during the past few months.

Theriault said Therrien has a long list of arrests and convictions for theft, burglary, assault and motor vehicle violations in Portland, Florida and the River Valley area.

Although Therrien is scheduled to appear in Superior Court on June 8, Theriault said he expects Therrien’s case to go before the grand jury prior to the court appearance.
