LIVERMORE – The town will hold a special meeting next month to vote on buying a new sand truck, selectpersons decided Monday night.

“We need one don’t we?” asked Selectperson Wayne Timberlake.

“She’s pretty tired,” said Moe Laverdiere, highway foreman.

Selectperson Tom Berry has been checking prices and has been quoted $54,000 to $59,000 for the chassis alone. “Because of the new pollution regulations, the big freight companies are putting in their orders, and dealerships are booked until the end of the year. We’re looking at a $6,000 to $8,000 increase in price from 2006 to 2007,” he said.

Chairperson Grace Jacques suggested that this item be a priority at the next budget meeting.

A warrant for the town meeting will be posted next week and a date set. Pulp and cement trucks have been violating the posted road weight limit, officials noted.

“Most heavy trucks will not proceed when there is standing water on the roads,” Laverdiere said.

There was a special circumstance where a heavy truck was permitted because residentshad no drinkable water on their property. They asked the town for permission for a well-drilling truck to enter the property.

“Permission was granted only after Moe inspected the road and deemed it to be dry enough for that purpose,” Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub said, “and the property owner agreed to be responsible for damage, if any, to that road.”

Laverdiere’s 90-day trial period as highway foreman runs until April 12, and he has decided to continue in this position.

Brenda Merrill moved to accept his appointment and increase his salary by 50 cents an hour, and the board so voted.

It also voted to accept Ron Greenwood’s full-time employee status as his probationary period also expires April 12. He then becomes eligible for insurance retirement benefits.

Residents are reminded that the deadline for paying the second half of property taxes is April 17. “Because the 17th is Patriot’s Day,” Schaub said, “payment should be postmarked Saturday the 15th.”
