AUBURN – “The Agronomist,” a personal documentary project from Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme, will be shown April 5 and 6, at Central Maine Community College.

The film is a celebration of journalist, broadcaster and human rights activist Jean Dominique and his tireless fight against injustice and oppression in Haiti.

Demme is best known for his work in “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Philadelphia,” “Melvin and Howard” and “Stop Making Sense.”

“The Agronomist” covers Dominique’s career not only as an investigative journalist but also as director of Haiti’s Ciné Club, interweaving his life and work with the testimonies of family, friends and colleagues who worked together in the fight against injustice and oppression.

Demme shot many hours of footage over a 15-year period. Their joint project was tragically cut short in April 2000, when during turmoil leading up to elections in Haiti, Dominique was assassinated outside his radio station, Radio Haiti Inter.

“The Agronomist” is in color and about 91 minutes in length. The 2003 film is in English and has a PG-13 rating for some violent images and brief nudity.

Presented by CMCC and L/A Arts, it is the last film in this year’s International Film Series.

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, and Thursday, April 6, in Kirk Hall Auditorium, CMCC, 1250 Turner St. Tickets are $7, or $5 for film-club members. For more information, contact L/A Arts at 782-7228, or go online to www.laarts.org.
