HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – More than 40 soldiers were formally welcomed home from Iraq in a ceremony Saturday at the Hartford Armory.
The soldiers are members of the 208th Personnel Service Detachment, based in Niantic. They arrived in Kuwait in December 2004 and returned home about a year later.
The unit’s primary mission is to manage combat-essential personnel information and provide military personnel support.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell praised the soldiers as heroes, and also credited their family and friends with offering crucial support during their deployment.
“Trust me when I tell you, these soldiers couldn’t have done it without you – without your support, without your love, without your constant caring for their well being,” Rell told the spouses, parents and others who gathered for the ceremony.
Nearly 700 Connecticut National Guard members are either deployed abroad or training for deployment.
