BOSTON (AP) – The Red Sox placed pitcher David Wells and first baseman Hee-Seop Choi on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Wells, who was 15-7 last year and had offseason surgery on his right knee, was placed on the DL retroactive to March 28. He is expected to make his first start April 12.

Boston’s 42-year-old left-hander plans to pitch in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday, when the rest of the team is playing an exhibition game in Philadelphia. He plans to be with the team for the season opener April 3 in Texas and has said he might throw a final tuneup game for Boston’s Triple-A team in Pawtucket on April 7.

Choi, claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on March 24, has a strained left hamstring and was placed on the DL retroactive to March 29. He has a career batting average of .240 with 40 homers and 120 RBIs in 363 games.
