LEWISTON – As part of a photo-essay project at the Lewiston Adult Learning Center, adult education students will host a grand opening night featuring their photography from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at the Atelier Opulesce Gallery.

For the past few months, students at the Lewiston Adult Learning Center have been brushing up on their photography and writing skills. Photo-essay project participants were equipped with disposable cameras and sent home to take pictures of their lives outside of school.

The picture prompt: “What makes you happy?” Each student photographed something that, or someone who, makes them happy and wrote a short essay describing why they chose their subject.

The students selected for the project are from all over the world: old and new Mainers, Franco-American, Sudanese, Somali, Somali Bantu, Russian and Filipino. This learning opportunity was one of the many under way at the Adult Learning Center.

The multi-cultural photography show will be on display for two weeks following the grand opening.

The gallery is located at Callahan Art Preparatory Services, 143 Canal St., just after the bridge at the corner of Canal and Chestnut streets. Evening parking is available in the parking lot next to the gallery in front of FaithWorks. The gallery makes its facilities available for local, national and international artists to showcase their work.

Atelier Opulesce Gallery’s regular hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. However, the gallery will open specially on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for those who might find weekday hours difficult, but wish to visit the Lewiston Adult Learning Center Photography Show.
