Poetry slam

Author reading

FARMINGTON – Fiction writer Nicholson Baker will read from his works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Lincoln Auditorium UMF, Roberts Learning Center. It is free and open to the public.

The event is part of the UMF Visiting Writers Series and is sponsored by UMF’s Visiting Writers Series, Writers Guild and Student Senate. For more information, call 778-7425.

Dance-luau

FARMINGTON – A dance-luau will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 6, at the South Dining Hall, UMF Olsen Student Center. Cost is adults, $3; UMF students, free. A There will be giveaways throughout the night. It is open to the public. For more information, call 778-7339.

UMF speaker

FARMINGTON – The UMF Rehab Club will presents Awareness Day with U.S. Paralympic Curler Weston Smith from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the UMF Olsen Student Center. Smith will speak at 1 p.m. in North Dining Hall.

Friday service

KINGFIELD – A Good Friday service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 7, at the United Methodist Church. An Easter sunrise service will be held at 6 a.m. Sunday, April 9, on the church lawn. The service will be followed by a breakfast in the church.

In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the church sanctuary. Sunday school and the Easter service will follow at 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. respectively.

Society speaker

FARMINGTON – The Sandy River Valley Chapter, Maine Genealogy Society, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at the public library. Chanda Luker will talk about her research and how she found her father. Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome.

Talent show

STARKS – A talent show will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Sawyer’s Mills Road. Proceeds will benefit the Camp at the Eastward.

UMF event

FARMINGTON – Fun in the Sun will take place at noon Saturday, April 8, at Latte Landing, UMF Olsen Student Center. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call 778-7346.

Sunrise service

FARMINGTON – The Easter sunrise service sponsored by the Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry will be held at approximately 5:50 a.m. Sunday, April 16, on Voter Hill, a little more than a mile past the former WKTJ radio station, turn left and go straight up.

The service will be held as the sun appears over the hills. The half-hour service will be held rain or shine. Those attending are advised to dress warmly.

After the service all are invited indoors for muffins and beverages served at the home of Paul and Sue Taylor. The continental breakfast will be served by members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

All-Day Crop

STRONG – The Strong Elementary School eighth grade will sponsor an All-Day Crop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the school on Main Street.

The scrapbooking event will include make-and-take, demonstrations, goodie bags, door prizes and raffles. Several stores will be there with craft items.

The cost is $20 without lunch or $25 with a boxed lunch. Preregistration is requested; call Arlene at 684-3337, B & B Scrapping at 778-2225 or Mary at 684-3521. Proceeds will go to the class trip to Portland and Boston.

Annual meeting

PHILLIPS – The annual meeting of the Phillips Shared Ministry (United Methodist and United Church of Christ) will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 30, following the 10 a.m. worship service. David Svenson, district superintendent of the UMC, and David Gaewski, UCC conference minister, will attend. All members are invited and the meeting is open everyone.

Relay For Life

FARMINGTON – The annual Relay For Life will be held June 2 and 3 at Mt. Blue High School. There will be a variety of games and music.

The Relay For Life is an annual event held all over the country to raise money for cancer research. It also raises awareness of the disease. There will be information boards posted around the track for participants to read as they walk.

Church service

STRONG – Living Waters A/G, Strong United Methodist and Strong Church of the Nazarene invite everyone to join them for a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, at the Nazarene Church. Special music will be presented by the churches. For more information, call 684-3743.

Sunrise service

WILTON – There will be an Easter sunrise service on Easter morning, Sunday, April 16, at the time of sunrise at 211 Orchard Drive. Churches of the Wilton Ecumenical Outreach will provide a singing quartet, drum music, Easter hymns and prayers. The service will be held rain or shine.

Following the service there will be a free hot breakfast provided at the First Congregational Church of Wilton on Main Street. All are welcome.
