Maine Republicans are steadily losing their independence and becoming like the rabidly neo-conservative, fiscally irresponsible Republicans who control the White House. On the other hand, the Democrats remain the party of fiscal responsibility, fairness, diversity and workers rights. Democrats envision a bright future for Maine, while Republicans embrace a “you’re on your own” strategy and only foresee doom and gloom. The differences between the parties are especially clear lately. From the cronyism in Washington to the Maine GOP’s unwillingness to work together for the betterment of our state, the Republican Party is crumbling at both the state and federal levels.

I’m proud to be a Democrat and proud to be a Mainer. Gov. Baldacci and legislative Democrats are steering Maine in the right direction and putting Maine people first. Because of their leadership, Maine leads the region in personal income growth and is the most affordable state in New England in which to do business. Democrats should feel proud of their accomplishments, proud of their vision and proud to call Maine home.
