BOSTON – Alex Ovechkin scored 3:30 into overtime, making him the sixth NHL rookie to reach 100 points and giving the Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory against the Boston Bruins on Monday night.
Ovechkin’s goal snapped a six-game drought, that matched the longest of his first season, and gave him 49. The 20-year-old left winger has four games left to score again and join Teemu Selanne as the only NHL rookies to post 50 goals and 100 points in a debut season.
Ovechkin broke in on the right wing and fired a wrist shot that sailed in over Tim Thomas’ glove.
Mark Stuart had his first career NHL goal for the Bruins, who tied it in the third period.
Canadiens 3, Senators 2
MONTREAL – Richard Zednik scored his first goal in over a month midway through the third period to snap a tie, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2.
Zednik, who hadn’t scored in 13 games since March 7, backhanded a rebound into an open right side at 9:27 to give Montreal its second lead.
He paid for the goal by being pushed face first into the crossbar by Ottawa’s Peter Schaefer.
