ORONO – The University of Maine baseball team eked out a pair of wins over visiting Stony Brook on Friday, winning both games 3-2.

The Black Bears got all three of their runs in the opener in the bottom of the first as first baseman Joel Barrett drove in a run and then scored on an RBI single by Curt Smith. Kevin McAvoy also batted in a run in the inning. Scott Robinson pitched five innings for the win, striking out five.

Maine (19-10-1) won the second game in dramatic fashion, as Joe McHugh prevented extra innings with a two-out, two-on single up the middle that plated McAvoy for the winning score. Josh Zyskowksi picked up the win in relief.

Barrett had four hits in the two games.

Trinity 13, Bates 0

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Chandler Barnard pitched seven innings, gave up four hits with no walks, and went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Trinity to a 13-0 victory over Bates in a NESCAC college baseball matchup on Friday.

The Bantams (15-7) scored five runs in the first then added seven more in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Erik Paisley and a two-run single by Tim Bourdon.

Peter Meisel pitched four innings of scoreless relief for Bates (4-8).

Bowdoin 11, Colby 3

WATERVILLE – Trevor Powers pitched into the eighth inning for his 17th career win, and Jon Koperniak hit a two-run homer as Bowdoin cruised past rival Colby 11-3 in NESCAC East play Friday.

Koperniak’s shot put the Polar Bears (15-5) ahead for good in the second inning. Chris McCann had three hits and scored three runs in the win.

Lead-off hitter Nick Spillane picked up three hits in the game for the Mules (6-9), who knocked out 11 hits in the game but could not plate enough runs. Sam Kennedy-Smith was tagged with the loss in six innings of work.

Thomas, Husson split

WATERVILLE – Husson College mustered plenty of offense in a 14-2 victory over Thomas in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, but the Terriers bounced back in a defensive 1-0 contest.

Sean Brawn hit a three-run shot over the fence in the first inning of the early game to give the Eagles a lead that they would never relinquish. Brawn finished the contest 3-for-4 with six RBIs.

Ryan Pullman pitched a complete-game shutout for Thomas (10-13) in the nightcap. Jordan Stebbins scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, hitting a single into left field and advancing to second on a wild pickoff throw. Matt Pavlis hit a double-play ball to Husson shortstop Jason Harvey, but Harvey botched the throw to first, allowing Stebbins to score.

Softball

Maine sweeps

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of Maine Black Bears moved back into sole possession of first place in America East with a sweep of the defending conference champions Albany on Friday, with a 5-1 win in the first game and a 9-0 win in the second.

Erin Provost went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs for the Black Bears, while Brittany Cheney had two hits, including a solo homer as well. Sarah Bennis pitched a complete-game to pick up her 15th win of the season.

In the second game, Provost belted a three-run shot and Cheney hit a two-run homer, both in the second inning that gave Maine a 7-0 lead. The Black Bears won in five innings due to the eight-run rule. Cheney went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Black Bears starting pitcher Jenna Balent allowed just four hits and had four strikeouts.

UNE takes two

BIDDEFORD – Lisa Baillargeon had four hits and the University of New England softball team rode a pair of complete-game efforts from its two starting pitchers to a sweep of Regis College, 5-1 and 6-3 Friday.

Sarah Hamel struck out five and gave up an unearned run to pick up the win in the opener. Michaela O’Rourke gave UNE the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single off Kerri Bertorelli, with a groundout by Katie Morin and a double by Kelly Bedard, plating a couple of insurance runs later in the inning.

The Nor’Easter offense got off to a faster start in the nightcap, scoring four runs over the first three innings. Jess Silvio backstopped UNE (14-7), scattering seven hits and striking out five.

Colby sweeps UMPI

WATERVILLE – Linsey Toomey threw a five-inning perfect game as the Colby College softball team took an 8-0 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the first game of a doubleheader Friday at Crafts Field. Colby also took an 11-1 win over UMPI in the nightcap.

Both games went five innings because of the eight-run rule. Toomey also had six strikeouts. Lauren Olmsted had two-hits and three runs scored in the first game for Colby (6-12).

In the second game, Amy Palmer had two hits and four RBIs, while Alaina Clark drove in three runs to carry the Mules offense. Colby starter Amanda Roehn gave up just two hits to pick up her first victory of the season.

St. Joseph’s sweeps

BANGOR – Kristi Albert collected four hits as the St. Joseph’s softball team took both games of a doubleheader with Husson, 11-2 and 11-0.

Freshman hurler Gabrielle Burrola scattered five hits across five innings in the early game after her teammate spotted her a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Third baseman Leanne Morton picked up a pair of RBIs, and Albert, Alysn Ludwig, and Amanda Roy each scored a pair of runs. Lindsay Mitchell had two hits for the Eagles.

Colleen Delahanty pitched five innings of one-hit ball in the second game, and Burrola delivered a three-run triple at the plate. Kim Bechard and Colby McKenney each had a pair of RBIs for the Monks.

USM swept

GORHAM – LeEllen Lewis had three hits, including a triple and a pair of RBIs, to lead Roger Williams University to a 7-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the first game of a college softball doubleheader.

Laura McAbee had a solid outing for Roger Williams to earn her eighth victory of the season. USM’s Dawn Ross belted a two-run triple in the fourth.

In Game 2, Roger Williams scored four runs in the fourth to overcome a 2-0 deficit and seize the game. Kristin Foss picked up the save and drove in two runs for Roger Williams (14-15), while Callie Nealon had two hits and an RBI. Sabrina Mills went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Huskies (11-11).

Women’s lacrosse

Castleton State 16, Thomas 6

WATERVILLE – Nicole Bouchard scored four goals to pace Castleton State to a 16-6 victory over Thomas in North Atlantic Conference girls’ lacrosse action on Friday. Erin Barry netted a hat trick and added an assist for Castleton.

Terrier freshman Nicole Bouchard knocked home three goals. Courtney Dion, Katie McNally, and Tiffany Malinowski also scored in the game for Thomas (0-4).
