South Paris – Vernon A. Brown, 85, of South Paris passed away peacefully April 12, at the Maine Veterans’ Home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Harrison on March 1, 1921, the son of Homer and Wilma (Southworth) Brown. He was educated in Waterford schools and attended Bridgton Academy. He remained a lifelong resident of the Oxford Hills area.

He was married to the love of his life, Marquerite Deegan, for 57 years before her passing on July 23, 1997. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War ll.

He worked at C.B. Cummings in Norway as a shipping supervisor for 42 years where he retired in 1983.

He was a true gentleman and family man. He enjoyed golfing, family outings, public suppers and in the past four years he enjoyed dancing and watching the Red Sox games with his dear and special friend, Winnie Clark.

He was a communicant of St. Catherines of Sienna Church in Norway, a member of American Legion Post 82 and served as post commander, also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus and Paris Hill Country club. Mr. Brown was one of the co-founders of the Norway-Paris Comets Drum and Bugle Corp. He also played the bugle in that band.

He is survived by a son, Ray Brown and his wife, Mary Ann, of West Paris; a daughter, Peggy Heikkinen and her fianc, Alan Hazelton, of South Paris; a sister, Genice Edwards and her husband, Ernest, of Casco; a special niece, Shirley Knowles of Casco; a cousin, Walter Brown and his wife, Joyce, of West Paris; a grandson, Michael Heikkinen of Norway; two granddaughters, Debi Irons of Norway and Nancy Morrisette and her husband, Jay, of Bridgton; seven great-grandchildren, Baylee Heikkinen, Alex Waite, Phoenix McLaughlin, Courtney and Morgan McClean and Wade and Chocorua Morrisette.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; a brother, Richard Brown; and a sister, Doris Millett.

A special note of thanks to the caring staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home and dad’s physician Dr. Frank Kieliszek, who provided wonderful end-of-life care for our Dad and loving support for the family.
