LEWISTON – The Sisters of Charity Food Pantry has invited residents to help them “Pack the Bus” to fight hunger in the community.

Residents can drop off nonperishable foods and baby items at Shaw’s Supermarket locations in Lewiston or Auburn on Saturday, April 29, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at a yellow bus provided by Hudson Bus Lines.

Volunteers from Sisters of Charity Food Pantry and other participating food pantries will be standing by to take donations.

Items most needed are peanut butter, canned tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, baked beans, canned fruits, staples like flour, sugar and rice, fruit drinks, pasta products, baby wipes, diapers and baby food.

Formerly known as the Good Shepherd Food Pantry, the Sisters of Charity Food Pantry provides emergency food and connections to social services to help families in greatest need from the new location at the corner of Bates and Walnut streets.

Each month it serves more than 48,000 pounds of food to more than 2,600 people, a third of whom are children.

Cash donations are also welcome. For every dollar donated, food pantries can provide $12.50 worth of food.
