DIXFIELD – Senior Michelle Holmquist was 3-for-4 and scored three run as the Dirigo High school softball team completed a season sweep over Livermore Falls with an 11-6 win at Marble Park.

Dirigo (4-1) had pounded out 18 hits in a 15-5 win at Livermore Fall last month.

Junior Kathie Hutchinson settled down and pitched a complete-game five hitter and relied on a strong defensive effort.

“It was a good team effort,” Dirigo coach Gavin Kane said. “Katie didn’t have her best stuff, but she battled and our defense did a good job. “Michelle is hitting the ball and can carry us, but we are getting good production from the two-through-five batters in the order.”

Dirigo took control after scoring seven runs in the first two innings.

Megan Russell led off and came around on a trio of errors. Abby Fenstermacher and Holmquist both singed and Shannon Daley had a two-run double In the second, Russell raced home on errors again and Hutchinson had an RBI-double.

“In softball, you need every run,” Holmquist said. “We didn’t change anything for the rematch against them. Our approach was the same. The team is hitting the ball well.”

Livermore Falls starter Whitney McDaniel threw well also, but was a victim of non-support. The Andies defense committed eight errors, including multiple miscues on plays twice.

The first inning was strange and proved to be Livermore Falls’ undoing. Taryn Flagg (three singles), Jenika Kelley and Katie Warren each scored.

“Dirigo has our number,” Livermore Falls coach Brett Hammond said. “We scored three runs in the first and felt pretty good, but then Dirigo scored five runs. We had a couple plays that went against us. The big innings are hurting us. We can’t afford to give up so many runs.”

Erica Gats was thrown out attempting to steal and Chelsea Hollis was erased after being hit by a batted ball. The Andies stranded 10 baserunners, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.

The Cougars Dani Thompkins had a two-run double in the fourth.
