NORWAY – A cleanup effort for Pennesseewassee Stream, which has not been touched by neatniks for several years, is planned for Saturday, and organizers said any volunteer who wants to help is welcome.
Ken Morse, who is overseeing the effort, said he expects a dozen or so people this weekend to pull on their boots – the higher the better – and wade the waters to fish out trash and debris.
The 1.25 mile stream runs from Pennesseewassee Lake on upper Main Street, through the downtown business district and into the Little Androscoggin River beside Lower Main Street.
Morse said the stream will soon be receiving a lot more attention after the condo development is built at the former C.B. Cummings & Sons dowel mill site, and federal money is spent cleaning up the stream banks, sprucing up nearby parks, building stream-side trails and possibly constructing a footbridge.
And that’s a good incentive to get the stream prepared for its future, more visible role in the community. This weekend is also part of the National River Clean-up Week.
Morse said volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. on May 13 at the old Aubuchon building on Main Street.
There will be at least two canoes, and Morse suggests people bring gloves, fly dope and rakes. In an e-mail he sent, he stated he’ll supply garbage bags and water, the last item presumably a pun of sorts.
