The Lewiston High School tennis teams will send three players to their respective rounds of 40 at the state singles tournament after qualifying action Monday.

Chantal Lavertu, the No. 1 seed in the East III qualifying section, advanced easily, dropping just one game to Morse’s Kelsy Boyce to earn her way in.

On the boys’ side, James Morin, the No. 3 seed, and fourth-ranked Mike Sarrazin both advanced into the round of 40 with ease. Sarrazin fought through Chris Mawhinney of Edward Little 8-3 in his first match and then breezed past Calvin Forbes of Cony 6-0, 6-0 in his second.

Morin didn’t drop a game to either Mats Haaland of Brunswick or Ross Keller of Erskine Academy.

Dinesh Costlow of Edward Little was a first-round victim, as was Dan Gleason. Lewiston’s third singles player, Mike Butler, played tough with No. 7 seed Mike Harris of Waterville, but fell in the final round of qualifying, 7-5, 6-2. All seven of the seeded players in the boys’ draw advanced.

The girls’ draw saw two upsets, as No. 3 seed Erika Blauth of Camden Hills fell in the second round to Lindsey Ford of Messalonskee, and seventh-ranked Anna-Lena Heinemann of Waterville fell in Round 2 to Katie Frink of Gardiner.

Lewiston No. 2 Katelyn Ouellette lost in the opening round to Ford, while Lewiston’s third girl, Julia Bergeron, lost to qualifier Deahna Giguere, the No. 2 seed, 8-4.

Edward Little’s contingent, Christine Chamberland, Harriet Lowe and Sarah Ross, all lost their first played matches.
